Windsor's drinking water comes from the Detroit River, treated and distributed by ENWIN (the Windsor Utilities Commission). Treatment includes ozone disinfection to control bacteria, viruses, and taste-and-odour compounds, plus a polyaluminum chloride coagulant that pulls color, bacteria, and suspended solids out of the raw river water before it reaches your tap.
The result is generally safe, well-treated municipal water — but it's not neutral water. Windsor's supply runs moderately hard, typically in the 90–125 mg/L range, which is gentler than inland Ontario cities like Waterloo or London, but still enough to leave scale on fixtures, water heaters, and glassware over time. Many homes, especially older ones near downtown or Walkerville, also still have lead service lines; ENWIN addresses this with an orthophosphate corrosion-control program that coats pipe interiors, but the coating works best alongside point-of-use filtration at the tap.
Seasonal shifts on the Detroit River can also affect taste and smell — spring runoff and warmer summer months sometimes bring mild chlorine or earthy/musty notes as the utility adjusts disinfection levels. Why does my water sometimes taste or smell like chlorine?
